Women's Soccer Shows Flashes in Opener

Box Score

LOS ANGELES — Underneath the lights for the first time in 2015, the Occidental women's soccer team played a solid Marymount (CA) team tough before falling 1-0 in its season opener as the Mariners found the game's only goal in the second half.

Madison Maurer scored the game-winner in the 59th minute, finishing off a corner kick from Sophia Tostado.

The Tigers had the bulk of their scoring opportunities in the first half and maintained a good deal of the possession, despite the loss.

"Although we lost, I've been impressed with our high spirit and our commitment is excellent," Oxy head coach Colm McFeely said. "We've been working a lot on trying to have more purposeful possession and we did that at times. We have a lot to work on, but there were plenty of positives for our first match."

Five different Tigers combined for eight shots on goal. Michaela Tsuha had the cleanest look at the goal from just inside the 18-yard box in the first half, with a defender to her left, but her right-footed strike missed just wide.

The Tigers are back in action on Saturday at San Diego Christian at 1 p.m.
