Box Score LOS ANGELES — It wasn't the result the Occidental College men's soccer team wanted, but after playing Claremont-Mudd-Scripps to a 0-0 tie, the Tigers still remain undefeated and in first place in the SCIAC standings
Oxy's record is now 6-0-2 and 3-0-2 in SCIAC play. CMS is 2-3-2 and 2-2-1.
The Tigers had the best opportunity of the game to score in the 8th minute, but could not convert the penalty kick. Connor Freeman hit a shot from the right side that was saved and then Tod Kawada had a look at the rebound, but was taken out by the CMS defense, setting up the PK. Valdair Martins-Lopes shot was saved by a diving Daniel Cui.
Later in the first half, Oxy appeared to have the game's first goal when Santiago Bedoya-Gallego hit the post and Kawada finished it off, but he was called off side.
Oxy outshot the Stags 20-8 and put six of them on the frame. Morgan Bennett-Smith nearly connected on a right-footed volley in the 68th minute, but it hit the cross bar.
Oxy goalkeeper Theo Atkinson made four saves.
Despite just a pair of yellow cards being issued, the game was full of physical challenges from both sides.
Next Match: The Tigers hit the road for their next two conference matches, beginning at Caltech on Saturday at 4 p.m. Oxy's next home game is against Redlands on Oct. 3 at 11 a.m. on Oxy's grass field at the top of campus.
