Box Score LOS ANGELES — The Occidental men's soccer team just keeps scoring and winning.
Led by their speed up front, the Tigers had five different players find the back of the net, cruising past UC Santa Cruz 5-1 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Sunday.
Oxy, which has scored 13 goals in three games, improves to 3-0. Last season, Oxy scored 43 goals in 20 games.
Connor Freeman, Morgan Bennett-Smith and Santiago Bedoya-Gallego all scored their second goals of the season against the Banana Slugs, while Brooks Yeager and Thayer Fisher put away their first scores of the year.
Zack Conrad, who netted the game-winner against Oberlin in the 87th minute on Friday night, had an assist, as did Grayson Burdon and Valdair Martins-Lopes, who currently leads the team with three assists on the season.
If it's any indication of where the Tigers stack up as they get set to begin SCIAC play with a road game at Whittier on Sept. 9, followed by a big home game against Pomona-Pitzer on Sept. 12 at 7 p.m., UC Santa Cruz tied both Chapman and Cal Lutheran, and Oberlin beat Pomona-Pitzer.
The Tigers played 25 different players significant minutes, getting to rest some of their key starters when their lead stretched to three goals in the 65th minute.
Blake Mooney scored the lone UC Santa Cruz goal off of a set piece on a pair of deflected headers from teammates Matthew Stickler and Reed Miller.
Freeman's goal started the party in the fifth minute for Oxy. The ball rolled back to him off of a corner kick and he buried a rolling shot to the bottom right.
Bennett-Smith took a touch around the charging keeper off of a through ball from Conrad and slotted a right-footed shot for the Tigers next goal in the 22nd minute.
After Mooney cut the lead to 2-1 for UC Santa Cruz, Yeager controlled a lofted cross from Burdon with his chest and scored with his right foot moments before halftime, giving the Tigers some much-needed breathing room with the game's result still in question.
Martins-Lopes found Bedoya-Gallego in the 65th minute and Fisher finished a loose ball in the Santa Cruz box off of a saved shot in the 74th minute.
Oxy outshot the Banana Slugs 20-6.
Oxy goalkeeper Tristan Cooper made two saves in 80 minutes before he was replaced by John Yonamine, who finished out the game without being challenged.
Cooper had excellent defense in front of him, led by All-American 400-meter sprinter Gabriel Barrett-Jackson, who was all over the field.
