Box Score LOS ANGELES — First year Shai Goodman scored her second hat-trick in a row and the Occidental women's lacrosse team battled back from a four-goal halftime deficit.
But despite a surge of energy from a crowd of 3,984 fans flowing in from a Science Fair on campus during the second half, the Tigers couldn't get over the hump against rival Pomona-Pitzer, falling 10-7 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Saturday.
Pomona-Pitzer had Oxy's number during the 2015 season, beating the Tigers four times, including once in the SCIAC Championship game and again in the NCAA Division III playoffs.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 0-2 overall and 0-2 in SCIAC play.
Pomona-Pitzer goes to 2-0 and 2-0.
After falling behind 6-2 at halftime, the Tigers rattled off five unanswered goals in the second half to take a 7-6 lead on a score by Rebecca Reese with 12:31. Pomona-Pitzer countered with a four-goal run of its own to finish the game on top.
From the coach: "Our performance was much better than our season opener on Wednesday and we put a lot of time in this week at practice," Oxy head coach Stephanie Janice Mark said. "But it wasn't enough to get the win today against a competitive Pomona squad. We'll look to learn from these two losses and we look forward to our Wednesday game."
The Sagehens faceguarded Oxy's top scorer from last season Sierra Slack for most of the game, limiting the Oxy star to just one goal. Slack did snag three draw controls and a ground ball.
Madi Hallare and Mackenzie Wright rounded out Oxy's scorers with a goal each. Nicole Litt had two caused turnvoers and Brita Loeb grabbed four ground balls.
Ally McLaughlin, Sarah Markowitz, Rebecca Long and Ying Fry each finished with two goals for the Sagehens.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday at Chapman at 7 p.m.
