REDLANDS — Lizzy Kosin recorded her second hat trick of the day and the Occidental women's water polo team gave top-seeded Whittier a run for its money.
But the Tigers came up a little short, falling to the Poets 13-8 in the First Round of the SCIAC Championship Tournament at Redlands on Friday.
Oxy beat Caltech 16-7 in the Play-in game earlier in the day on Friday. Kosin, Carly Zurcher and Amanda Akiyama all scored three goals against the Beavers.
Against the Poets, Hi'ipoi Lee added two goals, and Claudia Oppermann, Kyla Houck and Zurcher chipped in one for Oxy.
Janel Rivera led Whittier with five goals.
Season Impact: The Tigers fall to 4-12 overall and 2-8 in SCIAC play.
Whittier improves to 24-7 and 9-0.
The Tigers will play the loser of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Chapman on Saturday at 5:15 p.m.
