Box Score REDLANDS — The Occidental women's lacrosse team has been improving all year, the results just haven't quite shown it.
But with what looked like just minutes left in the season, it finally clicked.
The Tigers rallied for three goals in the final 2 minutes, 49 seconds to send the game into overtime and then Mackenzie Wright found Shai Goodman for the game-winning goal, giving Oxy an 11-10 win at Redlands in the first round of the SCIAC Championship Tournament on Wednesday.
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 8-10 overall and 2-9 in SCIAC play.
Redlands finishes the season 10-8 and 4-7.
Next Game: The Tigers advance to the semifinals at top-seeded Pomona-Pitzer on Saturday at 7 p.m.
Trailing 10-7 with defeat and a long offseason just moments away, Sierra Slack scored, then Ciara Byrne found the net and then Slack tied the game at 10-10 with 1:25 to play on a free position opportunity.
"We ended up going down by three with 3 minutes left. We started winning draws and getting good looks," Oxy head coach Stephanie Janice Mark said. "These kids have grit and they really showed it tonight. They were able to battle until the end."
Wright, Slack, Madi Hallare, Brita Loeb and Goodman all scored two goals for Oxy. Loeb and Wright also added a pair of assists and Goodman added one.
Loeb had four ground balls and a pair of draw controls for the Tigers. Annie Stevens came up big with clutch draw controls down the stretch, finishing with three on the game.
Oxy goalkeeper Neah Bois had a big night in the net, saving a career-high 12 shots.
Hanna Morford led Redlands with four goals, and Dulce Moll and Stephanie Garrett each added three.
The Tigers have had their ups and downs all year. After the a 0-4 start to the season, Oxy showed significant improvement, rattling off a six-game non-conference winning streak. The Tigers were clearly a different and better team, but lost three in a row at the beginning of April by just one goal, including a one goal loss to the Bulldogs.
Oxy has lost four games this season by just one goal.
The Tigers have a chance for another upset against the Sagehens, who beat Oxy last season in the SCIAC Championship game and the NCAA Division III playoffs.
