LOS ANGELES — Katherine Kim scored the game's only goal in the 70th minute as the Occidental women's soccer team picked up a crucial win over Redlands, 1-0 at Jack Kemp Stadium on Homecoming Saturday.

The victory puts the Tigers into fourth place in the SCIAC standings at 6-5-1 overall and 4-5-1 in SCIAC play. Oxy has 13 points with four more conference matches to play. The Tigers are two points behind La Verne for third and one point ahead of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, Whittier and Redlands.  

Redlands falls to 7-6 and 4-6.

After a mostly uneventful first half, the second half brought a lot more action sparked by the Tigers' goal. It looked like Dru Ishibashi was inbetween shooting the ball and crossing it, but ended up playing a perfectly placed ball that brought Redlands goalkeeper Hannah Menk off her line. Kim beat her to the ball for the game-winning goal.

Redlands picked up its urgency and gave the Tigers a handful of scares shortly after the goal.

The Bulldogs had a counter attack that needed Oxy goalkeeper Sydney Tomlinson to charge off her line in the 71st minute, an anxious high bouncing ball in the 73rd minute and a free kick that led to Redlands' best chance at a goal by Nicole Warnick, but it was saved nicely by Tomlinson.

Oxy's Kayla Coleman nearly gave the Tigers an insurance goal in the 85th minute on a well-played long cross by Erin Iacullo, but it was saved.

The game finished on two frantic corner kicks by Redlands in the final minute. Oxy was able to clear the ball and celebrated its jump up in the SCIAC standings.

Redlands returns to play at Pomona-Pitzer on Oct. 18 at 4 p.m.
