Box Score LOS ANGELES — Elleni Bekele headed in a pair of goals as the Occidental women's soccer team kept its playoff destiny in its own hands with a 2-1 win over Chapman at Jack Kemp Stadium on Wednesday.
Bekele scored on a corner kick in the 62nd minute to tie the game at 1-1 on a cross from Molly Callans and again on a corner in the 84th minute on a cross from Robin Waymouth.
Bekele, a sophomore midfielder from Long Beach, leads the Tigers with five goals on the season. She had two in the team's season opener against at Caltech and one at Redlands. She also recorded an assist at La Verne.
"Everything tonight stemmed from the way we started the game," Oxy head coach Colm McFeely said. "High energy, assertive and a willingness to get on the ball and look to play. It took character and a good mentality to keep going and fight back from a goal down and get the win. It was a good team effort with a few very fine performances and I'm sure no-one will begrudge me mentioning Elleni Bekele and her two headed goals."
Chapman's goal came from Emmie Farber in the 55th minute, putting the Panthers up 1-0.
The Tigers improve to 7-6-2 overall and 5-6-2 in SCIAC play with 17 conference points. Oxy is currently tied for fifth place with Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Redlands, but owns the head-to-head tiebreakers with both schools and can secure a playoff berth with a win at second-place Pomona-Pitzer in its final regular season game of the year on Saturday at 11 a.m.
"We face a good Pomona team this Saturday where a win will put us in the Postseason Tournament," McFeely said. "These are the kind of opportunities you strive to get and we'll be ready come Saturday."
The semifinals of the playoffs will be on Thursday, Nov. 2 at first-place Cal Lutheran with the Championships to follow at the highest remaining seed.
