Box Score LOS ANGELES — Christina Sabin, Ciara Byrne and the Occidental defense recorded the program's first ever shutout in a dominating 14-0 win over Augustana (IL) at Jack Kemp Stadium in the team's season opener on Tuesday.
Oxy had four players with hat tricks. Ciara Byrne, Alessandra Pelliccia, Rebecca Reese and Shai Goodman all scored three goals each, and Sierra Slack added two.
The Tigers showed that a strong offense can be the best defense. Occidental spent the majority of the game with the ball in their possession, firing off 35 shots.
Led by Pelliccia, Oxy dominated the draw 13-2. Pelliccia had four of them, Emma Barrow had three and Madisyn Hallare had two.
Oxy was outstanding defending against Augustana (IL) in transition, holding it to just 5 for 14 on clear attempts. The Tigers also only allowed five shots in the game, three that were saved by Neah Bois.
"The win tonight was a total team effort," Oxy head coach Stephanie Janice Mark said. "Our attackers put the ball in the back of the net and re-defended well to get us extra possessions. (Pelliccia) led the night with four big draws when we really needed them and I can't say enough about our defense with our first shut out in program history."
Season Impact: Oxy improves to 3-0 on the season, winning its third in a row by double figures. The Tigers won two games in Texas against Linfield and Soutwestern (TX) to open the season.
Next Game: The Tigers are back in action at Chapman on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Oxy's next home game in March 9 against New England College at 1 p.m.
