Redlands Takes Game 1

Box Score

LOS ANGELES — Oxy ace Nolan Watson had another good outing, with six strikeouts and just one hit in eight innings of work.

But the Occidental baseball team made three errors behind him and a handful free passes cost the Tigers in a 5-1 loss to Redlands at Anderson Field on Friday.

The only hit off of Watson was a single off the bat of Jordan Babbitt in the top of the fourth when Redlands posted three runs.

The Bulldogs also scored one in the third and Aaron Singh hit a solo homer in the top of the ninth, pushing the score to 5-1.

Watson threw a no-hitter earlier this season against Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, earning SCIAC Baseball Player of the Week honors and a spot on the D3baseball.com National Team of the Week.

If the Redlands bats were quiet, Oxy's weren't much better, managing just five hits as a group.

Oxy's only run came in the first inning when Jack Brancheau reached on an error and then Devon DeRaad singled him in on an opposite-field, light-drive to left field.

Redlands starter Felix Minjarez struck out 10 batters and didn't allow an earned run in eight innings pitched.

Oxy centerfielder Eamon McNeil went 2 for 4 with a double. DeRaad, Brancheau and Reid Gibbs all went 1 for 3.

Season Impact: The loss bumps the Tigers into second place in the SCIAC standings at 11-5 with eight games to play.

Cal Lutheran is in first at 13-5 with a series against Caltech and Claremont still left on their regular season schedule.

Oxy's overall record goes to 20-11.

Redlands improves to 21-13 overall and 12-7 in SCIAC.

Next Game: Oxy and Redlands play a doubleheader in Redlands tomorrow beginning at 11 a.m.
