Tigers Wrap Up SCIAC Tourney With Competitive Matches

LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's water polo team competed at the SCIAC Championship Tournament, hosted by La Verne this weekend.

Friday, April 21

Game 1: Occidental 18, Caltech 4

Box Score

Oxy opened competition with an easy win over the Beavers in the No. 8/No. 9 seed play-in game. Carly Zurcher and Kyla Houck led the Tigers with four goals, and Hi'ipoi Lee, Mirei Yasuda and Zulema Iboa-Garcia each added two.

Zurcher, Oxy's leading scorer on the season, also had a game high three assists. 

Oxy goalkeeper Anna De Groot made seven saves and Lori Berberian led Oxy with four steals. 

The Tigers advance to play the top-seeded Poets during the afternoon. 

Game 2: Whittier 15, Occidental 7

Box Score

Zurcher scored a team-high three goals, Claudia Oppermann added two and Iboa-Garcia and Yasuda each added one, but it wasn't enough for the Tigers against the top-seeded Poets.

Lee had one assist and De Groot made five saves for Oxy.

Zurcher, Iboa-Garcia and Oppermann all added two steals. 

Hannah Rodriguez scored a game-high four goals for Whittier. 

Saturday, April 22

Game 3: Claremont-Mudd-Scripps 15, Occidental 10

Box Score

Zurcher led the Tigers again with four goals, Opperman and Lee added two and Oxy hung in with CMS until late in the game, but didn't quite have enough juice for an upset.

Clair Baxter and Kaitlyn Eng led the Athenas with three goals each.

Lee also had an assist and two steals for the Tigers.

Sunday, April 23

Game 4: Redlands 11, Occidental 7

Box Score 

Mirei Yasuda led the a balanced offensive attack with a pair of goals as six different Oxy players found the net.

Oppermann, Zurcher, Berberian, Chernoff and Iboa-Garcia all scored goals for the Tigers. 

The Tigers had a bumpy second quarter, being outscored 4-0. In the second half, Oxy bounced back to play Redlands to a 5-5 tie.

Rachel Nelson led the Bulldogs with four goals.
