LOS ANGELES — The Occidental women's water polo team started strong before falling to first-place Cal Lutheran 16-5 at Taylor Pool on Saturday.
The Tigers led 2-1 on a pair of goals from Monica Chernoff and trailed just 4-3 in the second quarter on a score by Abigail Lavold, but things went the wrong way from there. The Regals went on a 12-0 run that lasted until late in the fourth quarter to put the game out of reach.
Lavold finally ended the run with a score around the 2-minute mark.
Ella Maisano also had a goal in the fourth, rounding out Oxy's scorers.
Oxy goalie Mika O'Shea had six saves and two steals in the cage and Allison Smith had three saves and a steal. Chernoff and Chandler Luebbers each had two steals.
Mardell Ramirez scored a game-high five goals, and Nicole Roed, Victoria Meek and Christin Hirn had two.
Season Impact: Oxy falls to 5-7 on the season and 0-3 in SCIAC play.
Cal Lutheran improves to 9-6 overall and 3-0 in SCIAC.
Next Game: Oxy is back in action on Wednesday night, playing Austin College at 7 p.m. at Taylor Pool.
