Los Angeles, CA — Despite being down 1-0 at halftime, the Occidental women's soccer team rallied to win 2-1 on Wednesday night.
The Cal Lutheran Regals opened up the scoring in the 13th minute when forward Isabella Veljacic rolled the ball into the back of the net thanks to an accurate through ball that put her in a one on one situation with the Oxy goalkeeper. Oxy responded just 5 minutes into the second half when midfielder Chloe Hetzel's free kick from 30 yards out soared into the upper right corner of the goal. The Regals almost took the lead back immediately but Oxy goalkeeper Maggie Baird made a diving save to prevent Veljacic's header from hitting the back of the net. Both sides traded chances throughout the rest of the half but neither team was able to capitalize and the game headed to overtime. Just 5 minutes into the first overtime period, Oxy midfielder Gigi Yamamoto volleyed a loose ball on the top of the penalty box over the Regals' goalkeeper to end the match and give the Tigers the 2-1 win in a spectacular fashion. Cal Lutheran goalkeeper Gabby Flores made 6 saves on the night while Oxy goalkeepers Ingrid Odmark and Maggie Baird combined for 3 saves.
Next Game: The Tigers will travel to face the Caltech Beavers on Saturday in a crucial regular season finale.
