Los Angeles, CA — Occidental College played Cal Miramar this weekend in a calm yet riveting game.
The game started off with Cal Miramar snagging the ball, however Oxy's #2 Sydney Shipp was quick to steal possession and score twice. Oxy maintained solo standing on the scoreboard for the next four minutes until Cal Miramar's #23, Jonathan Akharoh, put them on the board at 2-8. As the game progressed, the Tigers were able to maintain solid teamwork, "especially on the defensive side of the ball" says #40, Andrew Waldman. #22, Kyle Dosa, provided great demonstration of said cohesion and defensive plays when he entered the court and stayed open for each of his teammates, throwing passes to his fellow players, and moving the ball across the court as if that was where the ball was destined to move. Oxy's offense really came out when #11, Isaiah Jeannot, offered an amazing assist to Shipp making the score 31-6. With five minutes left in the first half, our #40 Andrew Waldman walked onto the court for the first time this season with energy the opponents, and audience, were not ready for. While Miramar's #20, Christian Sellers, took a rebound and assisted in bringing Miramar to 11-40, Waldman was prepared and snuck up with a killer steal. With moments to spare, Waldman took a jump shot and although it did not make it inside the basket, Dosa was ready on his feet and took the offensive rebound bringing the score to 47-17 at the buzzer.
The second half of the game had a lot more energy from Cal Miramar's Falcons. Just a minute in Sellers, #20, made a layup only to be canceled out by #5, Aiden Williams', free throw shot. At this point in the game the ball spent a lot of time traveling between the two courts, however a steal by Shipp with fifteen minutes left on the clock seemed to change the energy for our Tigers. Waldman made two free throw shots bringing the score to 67-24 only to then assist in Dosa's three-point jump shot that brought them to 70-24. Towards the end of the game, around ten minutes left, #12 Jacob Lopez, was on fire bringing Oxy from 85 to 91 in the span of two minutes with his last layup followed by a jump shot from #10 Forrest Nishi. The game could not have ended on a better note with Waldman taking a jump shot followed by a layup that scored us a perfect 100 points. The final score ended up being 100-46 with Oxy's tigers ready to take on much tougher competition.
Overall, six Tigers scored in the double digits. Oxy was led by Shipp, who scored 23 points. Following Shipp, #5 Aiden Williams was next with 15 points. Jeannot and Dosa put up 12 points and #3 Anthony Hollerich and Waldman earned 10 points each.
Next game: The Tigers play Cal Lutheran University in Thousand Oaks, CA at 7:00pm on Wednesday, December 1.
