Los Angeles, CA — Occidental's men's soccer team traveled to Thousand Oaks, CA to face the California Lutheran University Kingsmen on Wednesday night.
The 1st half of the game was closely fought and played hard by both teams. The defenses were playing well and making it difficult for the offenses to put together shots on goal. In the 9th minute of the game, the Kingsmen had a steal that led to a break for the goal.
Oxy goalie Riley Nyhan made the quick decision to come up and got to the ball right as the Cal Lutheran player kicked his shot. Nyhan was able to make the save and preserve the 0-0 tie, which would remain the score through the end of the 1st half.
The Tigers came out of the half ready to play, as they have all season. Just over nine minutes into the 2nd half, the Tigers were able to open the scoring. Oxy was presented with a corner kick opportunity and Joey Schwartz made a beautifully placed kick that Andrew Notter timed up perfectly and placed an impressive header right past the Kingsmen goalie to give the Tigers a 1-0 lead.
Oxy would continue to play good defense and limit Cal Lutheran's opportunities to get good looks at the goal. The Kingsmen would only be able to get two shots on goal in the 2nd half.
However, the second opportunity would come near the 87th minute of the game, and the Kingsmen took advantage of it. A Cal Lutheran player made a short pass that another offensive player took and made a shot attempt that snuck into the goal to tie the game at 1.
The final score of the game would be 1-1. It was a well fought match between two talented teams that will ultimately meet again at Patterson Field on Saturday, October 29th.
Next Game: The Tigers will be in action at Patterson Field on Saturday, October 15th to take on the Whittier Poets.
