Los Angeles, CA — The Occidental College men's soccer team traveled to La Verne on Sunday night to take on the University of La Verne Leopards. The Tigers were coming into this game with an overall record of 6-2-1 and a conference record of 3-1-1.

Both teams came out sharp on the defensive side of the ball to start the game. The Tigers were able to have nine shots on goal compared to the Leopards three, but both teams were kept off of the scoreboard through the first half of the game. 

Nearing the 62nd minute of the game, the Tigers were presented with a throw-in on their side of the field. Joey Schwartz threw the ball to the center of the field where Joshua Hamlett was able to use his upper shoulder to push the ball past the goalie and into the net for a 1-0 lead. 

In the 65th minute of the game, a La Verne player made a hard slide tackle on Christian Corcoran down the left side of the field that set the Tigers up with a penalty kick. Jake Foster took full advantage of the opportunity and placed a strong kick into the back of the net to double the lead to 2-0. 

The Tigers refused to let up their energy and continued to play strong defense, limiting the Leopards to three total shots and one shot on goal for the game. 

The Tigers put a final exclamation point on the game when another foul by a La Verne player set up another penalty kick for Oxy. Joey Schwartz took the kick this time and followed Foster's lead by placing a kick perfectly to get it past the goalie for the 3-0 lead.

Next Game: With the win the Tigers improve to 4-1-1 in SCIAC play. They will be back in action at Whittier College at 7:00 PM on Wednesday, October 8th for another SCIAC matchup.
