Los Angeles, CA — The Occidental men's basketball team was in action for their first regular season matchup of the year against Caltech in a non-conference matchup against the Beavers.
The Tigers got off to a hot start in the game with a 7-0 run to start the first half. The Beavers would not go away easily in this 110 Rivalry game, as they battled back and eventually tied the game at 17 with 10:43 remaining in the half.
From this point in the first half it would be a back and forth battle between the two teams, with 4 lead changes occurring after the 10 minute mark of the 1st half. Oxy would eventually take a 30-27 lead into the locker rooms at halftime, as Anthony Hollerich was leading the way with 14 points (5-7 FG, 3-4 3P) in the half. Sydney Shipp and Kyle Dosa were controlling the glass with 5 and 4 rebounds in the half, respectively.
Once the 2nd half was underway the teams would continue to go back and forth scoring baskets. With 14:50 remaining in the game the Tigers were able to get hot from 3-point land. Three Tiger possessions in a row would end with a made 3-pointer, starting with a Shipp 3-pointer with an assist from Aiden Williams. The next Tiger possession would see Hollerich drain another from long range with an assist from Shipp and Williams would follow with another one from deep with an assist from Hollerich.
This run would give the Tigers a 46-39 lead with 13:39 remaining in the game. The Beavers refused to quit, however, as they stormed back with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 49-46 lead with 9:40 left in the game.
Hollerich would once again step up and make two more 3-pointers to give Oxy the lead back before he would also step up to the free throw line and hit two big free throws to extend the lead after a technical foul was assessed to Caltech.
Shipp would come up clutch with an and-1 opportunity that he converted with a made free throw to give a 66-59 to Oxy advantage before Williams essentially closed the game out with another 3-pointer to make it 69-61 game with 1:08 remaining.
The Tigers would go on to win by a score of 74-65. Hollerich had a huge game with 34 points (10-16 FG, 7-9 3P), 2 rebounds and 1 assist. Dosa led the team in rebounds with 7 and also contributed 5 steals, 3 assists and 11 points. Shipp also had an impressive game finishing with 15 points (6-15 FG, 2-3 3P), 6 rebounds and 3 assists.
