Thousand Oaks, CA — On Saturday, Oxy traveled to Cal Lutheran University. The women's team had a fantastic showing, winning the meet comfortably, and the men's team put up a really strong performance despite losing a few swimmers. The thrilling meet gave the Tigers some really good competition before their mid-season meet this upcoming weekend.
Starting off the meet on a really fantastic note, both the women's and men's teams won the 200 medley relay. The A relay for women consisted of Marisa Emoto, Julia Mayuzumi-Shiroishi, Emily Szopa, and Sarah Radle (1:50.72), followed by the B relay that also beat Cal Lutherans B relay. Megan Chow, Sophia Vitek, Florence Lo, and Chanel Ng made up this strong B relay (1:55.3). On the men's side, Carter Park, Nate Pitroff, Matthew Spruance, and Josh Biggs made up the winning A relay (1:37.37) followed by the B relay consisting of Beau Brauer, Peyton Resto, Ian Harker, and Compton French (1:43.89).
Continuing with the incredible breaststroke depth on both sides, first year Julia Mayuzumi-Shiroishi won both the 100 and 200 breastroke. She won the 100 breaststroke in a time of 1:09.35 followed by Sophia Vitek (2nd, 1:11.91), Chanel Ng (4th, 1:14.02), and Alyssa Pfitzer Price (7th, 1:16.86). On the men's side, first year Peyton Resto swam a fantastic 100 breast out touching Cal Lutheran in the last lap of the race to win it all. He won the event in a time of 1:02.43 followed by Gavin Thomas (5th, 1:05.74), and Beau Brauer (6th, 1:08.41).
Occidental's amazing depth really shows in the butterfly events as well. On the women's side Sarah Radle won the 200 Butterfly in a time of 2:12.36 followed by Florence Lo (4th, 2:28.67). Emily Szopa comfortably won the 100 fly in a time of 57.98 followed by Marisa Emoto (3rd, 1:00.89), Eloise Sundal (5th, 1:07.34), and Kayla McIntosh (6th, 1:09.75). Sweeping the men's butterfly events as well was Nico Cantrell winning the 200 fly in a time of 2:00.13 followed by Joshua Spessert (2nd, 2:01.94), and Matthew Spruance (4th, 2:02.48). Matthew also won the 100 fly in a time of 53.48 followed by Josh Biggs (3rd, 53.71).
The Tigers went 1-2 on the 1 meter dive with Callie Rice taking first (211.50) and Elise Cady claiming second (185.18).
Overall Oxy had many 1-2 finishes as well as many time drops from previous meets. The team is looking fantastic for their mid-season meet this weekend. Come out and see the Tigers race the University of Redlands, CalTech, and Cal Lutheran this weekend at 10:00 a.m.!
