Los Angeles, CA — The SCIAC Championship between Occidental College and Chapman University definitely did not disappoint.
With these two teams being the #1 and #1 seeds in the SCIAC and having tied 2-2 and 0-0 in their previous two matchups this season, this game seemed destined to be a great championship game.
The game was intense from the very beginning to the very end, as there were a total of 46 fouls and 7 yellow cards between the two teams. Both teams were putting pressure on the defenses and goalies, and you could tell that these were the two best teams in the conference this season.
Oxy was able to test the goalie 5 times with shots on goal and a total of 13 shots, but the Chapman goalie was defending well the entire game. The same can be said about Riley Nyhan and the Tigers defense who only allowed 3 shots on goal for the entire game.
The game felt destined for overtime and it would eventually get there with a 0-0 tie at the end of regulation. The two 10 minute overtime periods were more of the same as the teams were battling and giving it their all.
It was not until the 109th minute that the first goal of the game was scored by Chapman, who would take the 1-0 lead. Occidental refused to give up with only 46 seconds remaining and the team was able to get a shot fired on goal with 10 seconds left but the Panther goalie made the game-winning stop.
It was a great game between two great teams but ultimately the Panthers prevailed 1-0 to win the SCIAC Championship.
The Tigers men's soccer team had an incredible season and will be back stronger for the next season.
