Los Angeles, CA — Men's basketball traveled to Whittier for a SCIAC matchup against the poets on Wednesday night.
Oxy would jump out to a quick 11-6 lead in the first half off of made baskets by Aiden Williams and Sydney Shipp along with two made free throws by Andrew Waldman to cap off the run. Whittier would refuse to go away and continued to battle to keep the game within striking distance.
Williams was on fire in this first half, especially from long range, knocking down 6 of his 7 three-point attempts in the half. Waldman also contributed 7 points in the first half, going a perfect 3-3 from the free throw line.
Sydney Shipp was all over the stat line collecting 4 rebounds and 4 assists while also scoring 8 points. Williams would make his 6th 3-pointer of the half with 1:44 remaining and cut the Whittier lead at the time to 44-41.
Whittier would make two baskets before the half was over but Waldman also cashed in a jump shot before the end of the half, making the halftime score 48-43 Whittier. Out of the half, the Poets would come out strong and go on a scoring run that led them to a 10 point advantage in the game.
The Tigers would do their best to battle back in this one but Whittier had a response for every run that Oxy was able to put together. The Poets would go on to win by a score of 90-72.
Williams finished with 24 points to lead the Tigers in scoring, making 7 total 3-pointers. Shipp finished with 6 rebounds and 6 assists while also totaling 13 points. Kyle Dosa had 9 points and 3 rebounds.
Oxy will face off against Chapman at home in Rush Gymnasium on Saturday, January 28th in another SCIAC matchup.
