Los Angeles, CA — Oxy's men's soccer team was at home on Wednesday for a matchup with the CMS Stags.Â
Early on in the game, CMS was in striking distance of the goal and took a shot that was blocked nicely by a Tiger defender to prevent a chance at a goal.Â
The Stags were able to get on the board first when they scored a goal nearing the 30th minute of the 1st half of the game. Both teams were playing tough defensively and limiting the scoring opportunities for the opposing offense.Â
The game would enter the half at the score of 1-0 in favor of CMS. To start the 2nd half Occidental's Christian Corcoran took a shot that would've equalized the score that was just wide of the goal. Goalie Riley Nyhan made a nice save shortly after the Tiger's shot that kept the score at 1-0.Â
Claremont got on the board again nearing the 70th minute of the game with a goal that extended their lead to 2-0. Joey Schwartz got a shot off for Oxy quickly after this but it was just wide of the goal. Tyler Na-Nakornpanom also had a shot that would've cut into the lead for CMS but it was slightly wide left.Â
In the 80th minute, Na-Nakornpanom had another opportunity that he capitalized on to score a goal for the Tigers to put them in a position to tie the game with one more goal. Following a corner kick by Aiden Aley, Oxy's Vicente Navarro took a shot that was blocked by a CMS defender that would've had a chance of being the equalizer.Â
Shortly after, with 4 minutes left in the game, CMS scored one more time to extend the lead back to 2 goals and make the score 3-1. The game would come to an end with the score of 3-1 holding up.Â
This was the first conference loss that Oxy has had all season and they remain ahead of CMS in the SCIAC standings despite the loss with a conference record of 5-1-2. Oxy will look to get back in the win column when they play next at California Lutheran University against the Kingsmen on Wednesday, October 17th.
