Game Recap: Women's Volleyball |

Tigers Tie it 12 Times in Set Two Against Bulldogs

Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental women's volleyball team hosted the University of Redlands for a highly competitive three set match.  At the start, both teams were tied in the conference with a 1-7 record.  The set scores for the match were 25-22, 26-24, and 25-21 Bulldogs.

Oxy was first to score with a block by Aniya Hawthorne and Lizzy Kerman.  Hawthorne then went on to get the second point with a well placed back corner kill that the defense wasn't prepared for.  Redlands pulled ahead early in the set, but the Tigers reduced the deficit to draw a Bulldog timeout when the score was 12-14.  Following a service ace by Leena Albello, Carranza and Skye Garcia each earned multiple points for the team to bring the score to a tie at 15 all.  The Bulldogs took the first set 25-22.

The second set saw the teams trade points and come to a tie multiple times.  Shout out to the other Oxy teams that came out to support their fellow Tigers as it makes a huge impact on the flow of the game.  Long rallies were seen as each team vied for the lead.  Eliana Channel and Carranza each had a kill to give the Tigers the lead at 17-16, but the Bulldogs took the lead after their timeout.  By the end of the set, the game had come to a tie 12 times making for the most intensely battled round yet.  The Bulldogs advanced their lead to 2-0 with the second set at 26-24.

Oxy came out with intention in the third set and grabbed an early lead, but Redlands caught back up at 10 all as they pursued a three-set victory.  The Bulldogs went on to take the lead, but the Tigers reduced a seven point gap to force the Bulldogs to work for each rally. The Tigers delayed the match point with a smart tip by Hawthorne.  Bulldogs claimed the match with the final score of 25-21.

Oxy was led by Carranza and Garcia who contributed 12.5 and 10 points to the team score, respectively.  Leena Albelo was on fire at the service line with three aces.  Adding to her well placed kills, Hawthorne was a wall on the net with four blocks.  Camille Thé earned 13 assists.  Kerman and Garcia ran the back line with 10 digs each.

The team travels to Pomona-Pitzer on Friday night for their next match and will return home for Homecoming where they will face the University of La Verne at 6 p.m.
