Box Score Los Angeles, CA – Tonight the Occidental women's volleyball team hosted Whittier College for senior night. Heading into the match the team knew they would need to step it up as the Poets currently sit in fourth in the SCIAC.
Senior Lizzy Kerman started the match with a serve and it ended with a kill by senior Skye Garcia, assisted by Kerman. Oxy took an early 4-1 lead before Whittier got more active on the court. The set was extremely tight with both teams taking the lead. The set came to a tie nine times, but in the end the Poets took the first win of the night with a set score of 25-21.
Hot off their first set win, Whitter took an early 4-1 lead. Oxy was able to halt their momentum temporarily with a block executed by Katelyn Cajigas. Cajigas went on to get the next point with a beautiful kill. As the set progressed, Whittier was unstoppable and pulled ahead 13 points before eventually ending the set with a score of 25-12.
The Tigers opened set three with the first couple of points, but it wasn't long before the Points pulled ahead again, 16-5. Aniya Hawthorne took a quick set to place a kill in the empty back corner which boosted Oxy's spirits as they went on to earn the next point. With the match point on the line, Ariana Carranza had two powerful kills that the defense were unable to receive. The final set ended at 25-12.
Although the score reflects a sweep by Whittier, Oxy had some amazing diving saves to keep their defense strong and some spicy attacks that kept their opponents hustling to earn each win.
Senior Stat Highlights:
In two competitive seasons, Garcia earned 311 kills, 43 aces, 39 blocks, 211 digs, and three double-doubles.
In three competitive seasons, Kerman earned 295 kills, 40 aces, 20 blocks, 144 assists, 447 digs, and seven double-doubles.
Tomorrow the team will head over to Caltech for a match at 2 p.m. It's the Beavers Homecoming, so it will be an exciting day. Plan to arrive early for extra time to park and support your Tigers!
