Los Angeles, CA — The Occidental women's basketball team played their 3rd SCIAC contest of the season on Saturday against the Caltech Beavers in Pasadena.
The game started closely contested with both teams finding ways to score. Toni Thompson and Paige Yasukochi scored Oxy's first baskets of the game and then Dominique Cabading knocked down a nice jumper as well.Â
Micah Elegores made a 3-pointer before Thompson finished the quarter with a made free throw to complete an and-1 opportunity. Oxy was able to begin to find a rhythm and extend their lead up to 9 points in the 2nd quarter on a fast break layup by Thompson.
The Beavers quickly cut into the lead but made jumpers from Gabriela Etopio and Michelle Lagunas-Monroy stopped the run by Caltech. The Tigers would head back into the locker room for halftime with a lead of 32-25.
The Tigers came out in the 2nd half with a converted and-1 by Dominique Cabading and back to back made layups by Etopio extended the lead to 12 points. Elegores closed the 3rd quarter off for Oxy by making a layup and the Tiger lead was 45-30 going into the 4th quarter.Â
Lagunas-Monroy had a nice tip in the 4th quarter and followed it with a made jumper of the next possession as well. A Paige Yasukochi made layup extended the lead to 19 points with 5 and a half minutes remaining in the game but Caltech cut into the lead to make it a 12 point game with just under 4 minutes to go.Â
Toni Thompson responded with a layup plus the foul and then Micah Elegores followed with a clutch 3-pointer to extend the lead back up 14 after the Beavers had responded with free throws and a made layup.
Oxy was able to close the game out by making free throws en route to securing their 2nd SCIAC win on the season by a score of 65-51. With the win, Oxy improves to 2-1 in SCIAC play and 5-1 overall. Oxy's next game will be against Austin College on Tuesday, December 19th at 12pm in Rush Gym.
