Los Angeles, CA – Saturday, March 4th, Occidental College's lacrosse team traveled to Claremont, California to play the Claremont-Mudd-Scripps' Athenas. After a strong start with first year Maeve Moylan winning the first draw control and sophomore attacker Emma Cho scoring the first goal of the game on a free position shot, the Tigers fought in a hard game against the Athenas.
While the final score was 24-4 Athenas, the Tigers battled throughout all four quarters. A sophomore attacker, Gabriella Acker, used her speed and tenacity to cause three turnovers. Additionally, Maeve Moylan won eight draw controls and had two assists.
Towards the end of the third quarter, Athena's first-year defender Sophia Shalz fouled the Tiger's Gabriella Acker in the eight meter and caused a free position goal. After lining up and running in, Acker successfully scored the second goal for the Tigers. The other two goals for the Tigers were scored in the fourth quarter by sophomore midfielder Ella Skoglund and junior attacker and captain Halle Knuston. Both of the team's final goals were assisted by Maeve Moylan.
Ella Skoglund impressively stopped many fast break opportunities from the Athenas and the entrance of frosh goalie Grace Morrow led to six saves. Morrow played 55 minutes and 46 seconds of the game against the skillful Athenas, a remarkable feat for a first-year goalie.
The Tigers hope that the next time they see the Athenas on their home turf, the score will look different since they improved as the game went on. Until then, Occidental College's lacrosse team is focusing on their next game this Wednesday, March 8th, at Chapman University. They encourage fans to stream their game against the Panthers!
