Claremont, CA – The Occidental volleyball team closed out their opening weekend with a win against Lewis and Clark on the final day of the Pacific Coast Classic, giving them a 2-1 tournament record.
In the first set, the two teams traded the lead a few times before Oxy eventually settled into a three point lead in the latter half. The Tigers had their offensive line firing off to secure the opening set win, 25-18. The second set was similar to the first, with the teams keeping it tight in the beginning before pulling ahead. The Pioneers battled back by stringing four points together and delaying the set point in the closest round, 25-21. In the final set, the Tigers took the lead early and never looked back, finishing the match at 25-21.
Ariana Carranza led the team in points at 12. Carranza's strength at the net came through with her first double digit kills of the season, as well as her double digit digs throughout every game of the tournament. Skye Garcia followed with a total of 11 points for the team from her six kills, four aces, and two blocks. Aniya Hawthorne rounded out the top three with 9.5 points and was the second best attacker with nine kills and the highest kill percentage on the team of .471. None of this could have been done without setter Camille Thé who earned 21 assists.
On defense, Carranza, Lizzy Kerman, and Elizabeth Sonza went 12, 12, and 10 on digs, respectively.
