Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental women's volleyball team hosted UC Santa Cruz Wednesday night for the second night in a row of action. The Tigers came out ready to battle the Banana Slugs and kept the game tight for the first set bringing the game to seven ties. Communication between the athletes was high which improved court coverage. Oxy kept UCSC within three points until the very end when UCSC pulled away, winning 25-21.
In the second set, the Tigers found themselves in the hole and struggled to climb out. The team rallied mid-set after a couple of kills from Skye Garcia and an ace Leena Albelo. UCSC took advantage of open opportunities in the back court when the Tigers moved in too close together. Camille Thé's service ace and Ari Carranza's kill would delay the Banana Slugs from claiming set two, but ultimately it wasn't enough to stop the blue and yellow momentum. Slugs finish ahead, 25-11.
Oxy found their groove in the third set, which started off by them earning the first point off of a kill by Elizabeth Hermosillo. The team was clearly determined to avoid falling behind and kept their spirits up even after points lost. UCSC had smart ball placement on their attacks, finding openings near the line or cutting across the net. Oxy reduced their six point deficit to three points midway through the round before UCSC responded. UCSC swept Oxy 3-0 with the final set ending 25-15.
