Los Angeles, CA – The Occidental women's volleyball team competed in Rush Gym on Tuesday night against West Coast Baptist. The match got off to a slow start with both teams trading points and the lead. The Eagles took set one, 27-25. Set two was another close set, but the Tigers claimed their first win, 25-22.
The third and fourth sets saw the Tigers return to their normal style of play, taking the lead and creating a sizable gap from the Eagles. The real momentum shift took place when Lizzy Kerman picked up a few aces to further the Tigers lead in the third set. The rest of the team contributed quick defensive saves and smart attacks. Kerman served 10 times before a change of possession. The Tigers were unstoppable and took the third set 25-6. The Eagles rallied in the fourth set, but it wasn't enough to stop the Tigers from taking the match win with the final set ending 25-14.
Ariana Carranza led the team in kills with 12 and an attack percentage of .480, her highest percentage yet this season. She contributed 18 points to the team score. Kerman's precision on serve gained her a career high of six aces, along with 15 digs and 9 kills. Aniya Hawthorne and Carranza each earned two blocks. Camille Thé earned a career high of 28 assists.
Volleyball competes against Claremnont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Rush Gym.
