Los Angeles, CA — The Occidental women's soccer team was at home for the first SCIAC match of the new season to face off against the Caltech Beavers.Â
Oxy entered the game with no losses on the year and a two game winning streak as they looked to extend that streak with another win in this game. The 1st half saw numerous offensive opportunities for the Tigers, as they were able to get off 12 total shots in the half, 4 of which forced the Caltech goalie to come up with the save.Â
Oxy's defense was also on point in the 1st half, only allowing 3 total shots and only one of which was on goal and forced Ingrid Odmark to come up with the save. Despite putting together good offensive looks, Oxy would enter halftime in a 0-0 tie with the Beavers.Â
It was early on in the start of the 2nd half however that Oxy would capitalize on yet another offensive opportunity and turn it into a score. Shortly after a throw-in for the Tigers, Julietta Seirmarco collected the ball on Oxy's side of the field and directed a nice pass to Lauren Cassel. Cassel would bring the pass in inside the penalty box, gather the ball and place it to the right of the goalie for the first goal of the game.Â
Oxy would not let up after scoring however as they continued to control the ball for most of the game and continued to get looks at the goal. The Beaver goalie was forced to make 3 more saves on shots on goal from the Tigers after the opening goal before the Tigers would be able to score again in the final ten minutes of the game.Â
Oxy would come across a corner kick opportunity that Gigi Yamamoto would take for the Tigers. Yamamoto placed the kick beautifully to teammate Clare Madden, who would use a header to score the Tigers 2nd goal of the game and give them a 2-0 edge with 6:43 remaining in the game.Â
The Beavers would make the game interesting when they scored themselves with under 4 minutes to go in the game, but Oxy would have to only stifle one more offensive opportunity from Caltech before the game came to a close in a 2-1 SCIAC victory for the Tigers.
Oxy's next game will come when they travel to Whittier to take on the Poets in another SCIAC matchup on Saturday, September 14th.Â
