Los Angeles, CA — Oxy's women's soccer team traveled to Whittier for a SCIAC away game against the Poets.Â
Whittier would come out strong on offense in this game as they had 5 shots in the first 11 minutes of the game. On their 6th shot attempt, Madeline Traylor was able to score the goal to give the Poets an early 1-0 edge.
Oxy would respond by turning up their offensive pressure, firing off two shots that forced a save by the Whittier keeper. In the 19th minute, Mia Steadman kept the pressure on and had a shot that a Whittier player had to make a defensive save on to keep the Tigers off the board.
On the resulting corner kick, however, Gig Yamamoto was able to perfectly place her corner by all Poet defenders and the goalie to score a beautiful goal for the Tigers that evened the score at 1 before 20 minutes had gone by.
Oxy was able to get off three more shots on goal in the 1st half, but Whittier goalie Beth Juarez continued to come up with big saves. The half ended in a 1-1 tie as both teams were able to stop any offensive attempts.Â
Whittier came out fast in the 2nd half and drew a foul on Oxy that gave Whittier a penalty kick attempt that they would score for a goal to make it 2-1 early in the 2nd half. Oxy quickly responded with a shot on goal from Julietta Seirmarco but the save was made by Juarez again.Â
Just before the 58th minute of the game Mia Steadman would find herself maneuvering past Poet defenders and ultimately getting off a great shot that Juarez would not be able to save this time, and the Tigers would tie the game at 2.
Oxy was able to keep offensive opportunities coming and get off good shots but Juarez was able to make 5 more saves before the game would close. Ingrid Odmark was responding with her own great game in goal, making multiple saves to keep the game tied as well.Â
Ultimately, the defenses would hold strong and this game would come to an end in a 2-2 tie.Â
Odmark made a total of 7 saves and the Tigers forced the Whittier keep to make 11 as well, but the Tigers would get their second tie of the season to remain unbeaten with a 3-0-2 record.Â
The next Tiger game will come vs. Pomona-Pitzer at home on Wednesday, September 20th.
