Los Angeles, CA — The Occidental women's soccer team took on the No. 9 ranked Pomona-Pitzer Sagehens at Patterson Field on Wednesday night.
The Sagehens were able to put pressure on the Tigers early on in this one and force goalkeeper Ingrid Odmark to make a few nice saves in goal to keep the game scoreless. In the 18th minute however the Sagehens were able to get on the board first to take a 1-0 lead.Â
Oxy's Gigi Yamamoto was able to get off a shot that had to be blocked by a Sagehen defender to keep the Tigers off of the board in the 27th minute of the game. Soon after this Pomona-Pitzer was able to score again when former Tiger Ella Endo capitalized on a penalty kick opportunity to double the Sagehen lead.Â
Oxy put together a good stretch of defense and blocked a Sagehen shot to keep the deficit at two scores until in the 36th minute Pomona-Pitzer would score the 3rd goal of the game. Odmark would make a nice save just before the half came to a close to have the score remain 3-0 heading into halftime.Â
In the 2nd half, Oxy would threaten to score twice in the 62nd and 63rd minutes of the game. Maile Fukushima would put a nice shot on goal but the Pomona-Pitzer goalie would come up with the save. Mia Steadman then had a shot blocked by a Sagehen defender.Â
Despite putting together strong stretches of play that lead to offensive opportunities, the Tigers would be kept off of the board for the first time all season.
Despite the loss, Occidental women's soccer remains a strong contender currently in 4th place in the SCIAC with a record of 1-1-1. The Tigers will play the Redlands Bulldogs in their next game which will be at Patterson Field on Saturday, September 23rd at 7pm.
