LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Men's water polo took on Cal Lutheran Wednesday night in a contest with big implications on the SCIAC tournament picture. The Tigers fell 13-10.
Â
Cal Lutheran got off to a hot start, scoring the games first two goals. Oxy answered with an
Aiden Cawley goal, but saw less luck later in the first half, trailing by as many as four in the second quarter.
Â
The Tigers finished the half and began the third quarter on a tear, cutting the deficit to one midway through the frame.
Jacob Carlson scored on one, assisted on the next to
Danny Miller, and
Travis Hughes scored 7-6 game.
Â
It was short lived, though, as the Kingsmen rattled off a pair of scores as the quarter reached the final minute. Oxy looked to grab momentum in the last 20 seconds as Miller drew a five-meter penalty, but Hughes' attempt was saved by the Cal Lutheran keeper to end the third 9-6.
Â
The Kingsmen put it away in the fourth. Oxy missed on three of its first four shot attempts, while the Kingsmen cashed in twice in that span. The Tigers turned the ball over to open the fourth.
Â
Around the pool, Cawley, Hughes and
Quin Concannon led with two scores. Hughes and Carlson each had two assists, while Carlson added a score.
James Derrod added a goal to his ledger at the end of the game.
Â
With the loss, the Tigers fell to 11-10 and 2-6 in SCIAC play. The Tigers SCIAC tournament hopes rest in the final four games of the season, as they need to win out and need those above to fall in the process. Their next game is against Chapman on Wednesday, November 6.
