Women's basketball travels to Whittier for second SCIAC matchup

12/13/2024 3:32:00 PM

LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's basketball returns to the hardwood for its second SCIAC contest of the season on Sunday, December 15 at Whittier.

The Tigers are 1-0 in SCIAC play and are seeking their second-straight win over the Poets. A win would make the Tigers one of three SCIAC teams to carry an undefeated conference record into winter break.

MATCH OUTLOOK
The Tigers handled the Poets easily, winning 64-48 last time out. They held the Poets to just 36% shooting from the field and a 2-of-15 clip from long range.

Dara Tokeshi and Ainsley Shelsta tallied double figures in the victory. Tokeshi went 5-for-8 from the field and picked up a steal.

The press was too much for the Poets, surrendering 14 turnovers to the Tigers' nine.

This time around, the Tigers are bringing four narrow losses into this one. A combined 11-point deficit between the four contests is overshadowed by their 2-4 record. However, a convincing 17-point SCIAC win over La Verne bodes well for the Tigers' chances in the conference slate.

BY THE NUMBERS
The Tigers are holding opponents to just 34% shooting on the season, but a -4 rebound per game margin has been the difference early in the season. The Tigers are leading opponents in all other statistical categories.

Despite Oxy's 27% three-point shooting percentage, junior transfer Emily Ko has been a force from deep. Albeit a small sample-size, the guard is shooting 43%.

Dominique Cabading sits at sixth in the SCIAC in steals per game at 2.3, while Michelle Lagunas-Monroy is second in the conference with 1.8 blocks per game.

SEASON AT A GLANCE
Although the Holidays are on the horizon, women's basketball is not ready to take a break. The Tigers travel to Hawaii next week to face two powerhouses out of the Northwest Conference – Puget Sound and Willamette.

The Loggers are the reigning NWC champs, while the Bearcats snuck in the NCAA tournament as an at-large. Puget Sound won its opening round game to reach the round of 32.

The Tigers are looking for three key Division III wins to leap above the .500 mark heading into January.
