Los Angeles, CA— The Occidental Tigers played host to La Sierra University in game 2 of a 3 game series on Sunday morning.
Both teams' starting pitchers were on point to begin the game, as lefty Declan Sklut allowed only one hit to La Sierra through the first three innings of play. The Tigers picked up a huge out at the plate in the 4th inning on a single to left field, catching the runner trying to score from 2nd base.
After picking up a big strike out with the bases loaded, an error allowed La Sierra to score 3 runs in the 4th inning. Oxy responded with a run immediately after when Jeffery Cambra led off with a single and Thomas Munch hit a double to move him to 3rd. Lou Martineau picked up the RBI single to bring in Cambra to make the score 3-1.
La Sierra tacked on a run in the 5th, but Oxy responded in the bottom half of the inning when Tyler Kubo came in to score when an error by La Sierra allowed him to reach home on a single by Cambra.
Oxy drew another run closer in the 6th inning when Mason Olson singled in Sean Elsee with 2 outs in the inning. La Sierra scored 2 insurance runs in the 8th inning with a 2-run homer that made the score 6-3 Golden Eagles.
The Tigers quickly got things started in the 8th inning when Sean Elsee led off with a single and Ben Rutkin drew a walk. After an Alex Henderson single loaded the bases, Mason Olson cleared them with a double to right field, tying the game at 6.
After shutting La Sierra down in the top of the 9th, Lou Martineau led off with a walk and was advanced to 2nd base on a sacrifice bunt from Sean Elsee. Tommy Woods drew a walk and a wild pitch allowed both Martineau and Woods to advance into scoring position.
Alex Henderson would step up to the plate and deliver the clutch walk-off single to right field that scored Martineau and gave Oxy a 7-6 win. Declan Sklut pitched a great game for the Tigers, throwing 5 innings and allowing 0 earned runs while striking out 6 batters. AJ Naha picked up the win after tossing a scoreless 1.2 innings of relief.
The Tigers improved their season record to 3-1 with the exciting walk off win and looked to get the series win over La Sierra in Game 3.
