Los Angeles, CA— Oxy baseball was looking to even the series with Whitworth at one apiece in the first game of a Saturday doubleheader.
Patrick Connolly was on the mound for the Tigers and erased a 1st inning error by inducing a ground ball double play from the next batter. Connolly was working around some trouble in the first 2 innings, but allowed a solo homerun in the 3rd.
In the bottom of the 3rd, Oxy responded with a 2 out rally when Lou Martineay drew a 2-out walk and Alex Henderson made the pitcher pay by sneaking a homer over the right field fence. Jeffery Cambra electrified the Oxy crowd by stepping up and blasting a line drive homer over the left-center field fence to go back to back with Henderson and give Oxy a 3-1 lead.
The Pirates battled back by putting up 5 runs in the 5th inning, but Oxy chipped into the lead by getting a run back in the bottom of the inning in the form of a Jefferey Cambra sacrifice fly that brought in Garrett Palme from 3rd base.
Whitworth put up 3 runs in the top of the 6th to take a 9-4 lead. Alex Henderson cut into the lead in the bottom of the 8th with his second home run of the day, launching a ball well over the right-center field wall and onto A.G. Coons Road to make it 10-5 Pirates at the time.
Whitworth would go on to win the game by a score of 12-5 to take the series from the Tigers. Henderson finished the game 3-4 at the plate with 3 RBIs and 2 runs. Jefferey Cambra went 3-3 with 2 RBIs and 1 run.
