Whittier, CA — Men's basketball traveled to Whittier for a SCIAC matchup against the Poets on Saturday afternoon.Â
Oxy got off to a hot start with a 7-0 scoring run to open the game, led by Micah Breaux scoring 5 of the 7 points. After 5 minutes had gone by in the 1st half, Aiden Williams went on a 8-0 run all by himself, knocking down 2 3-pointers and a jumper to give Oxy a 15-4 lead.
Later on in the 1st half, Nickhy Clotfelter also went on a personal 6-0 scoring run to put Oxy up by a score of 23-10 with 11 minutes to go in the half. Jacob Hamermesh made a layup with 7 minutes left in the half that pushed the Tiger lead up to 20 points before Williams made another 3-pointer to get the lead to 23.Â
A layup from Clotfelter had the lead up to 25 ith 2 minutes left in the half, but the Poets responded with a 3-pointer just before halftime to cut the Tiger lead to 52-30 heading into the break.
Williams stayed red hot from the field to open the 2nd half, making a 3-pointer and a layup that had Oxy's lead up to 29 points. A Micah Breaux layup later on had the Tiger lead up to 35. The lead would remain in the 30's for most of the 2nd half as Whittier was unable to put a run together to cut the lead down.Â
The Tigers would go on to win by a score of 99-78 to secure their 7th SCIAC win of the season. The Tigers remain a game up over Chapman for the 4th place spot in the conference with 4 games remaining in the season.Â
Oxy was led by Aiden Williams in this game who finished with 7 made 3-pointers and 27 points to go with 6 rebounds and 3 assists. Nicky Clotfelter also had a great game with 22 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 assists.Â
Andrew Waldman had another game with contributions all over the stat sheet, finishing with 9 points, 9 rebounds, 6 assists, 2 blocks and 4 steals. Micah Breaux and Chase Miller both nearly had double doubles as Breaux had 9 points and 9 assists and Miller had 8 points and 8 rebounds.Â
The Tigers will look to put together another all-around team effort when they play the California Lutheran University Kingsmen on Wednesday, February 7th at 7pm in Rush Gymnasium.
