Thousand Oaks, CA— Occidental's women's basketball team traveled to Thousand Oaks for a matchup with the Cal Lutheran Regals.
The game was back and forth to begin with 2 ties and 4 lead changes. Cal Lu put a run together on offense to take a 18-10 lead but Oxy battled back and scored 4 straight points to make it 18-14. Micah Elegores converted a bgi 3-point play to tie the game at 19 just before the 1st quarter ended.Â
The teams were once again trading baskets in the early going of the 2nd quarter, and the game was tied at 27 with 7:26 left in the half. Cal Lu would strike for a 10-0 run to go up 37-27, but Oxy stopped the run with a layup from Ainsley Shelsta assisted by Dara Tokeshi. The Regals would take a 50-34 lead into halftime in part to a 29-17 advantage in the 2nd quarter.
The Tigers were putting small runs together on offense to chip into the Regals' lead but Cal Lu would respond and score on offense when Oxy was gaining steam for a comeback. Oxy had the lead down to 67-55 with 3 minutes left in the 3rd after Ainsley Shelsta made a layup.
Micah Elegores hit a 3-pointer at the end of the 3rd and the score was 76-60 Regals. Toni Thompson would make Oxy's first two baskets of the 4th quarter to make the score 78-64. Oxy was unable to get the lead into single digits in the 4th and Cal Lu would win by a score of 102-84.
Toni Thompson had another double double for Oxy in this game with 37 points and 12 rebounds and Ainsley Shelsta had 17 points and 12 rebounds. Paige Yasukochi shot 50% from the field to score 10 points as well. The loss to Cal Lu is only the Tiger's 4th SCIAC loss of the season and they still are right on both Cal Lu (10-3) and La Verne's (10-3) heels in the SCIAC standings with a record of 10-4.Â
Oxy will play Bethesda University next on Saturday, February 10th at 2:00 PM in Rush Gymnasium.
