Clermont, FL— The Occidental College softball team faced Ithaca College in Game 1 of a doubleheader on the last day of their Florida trip on Thursday.
Sam Alfaro was on the mound for the Tigers and got out of early trouble in the first inning by retiring three batters in a row after allowing a walk and a single to start the 1st inning. In the 2nd inning, the Ithaca College leadoff hitter hit a home run to make it a 1-0 game.
Ithaca manufactured another run in the 3rd inning but Alfaro induced a big double play to get out of the inning before any more runs came across. Sophia Siu would leadoff the 7th inning with a walk and then steal second base to give Oxy a runner in scoring position, but the Ithaca pitcher would make clutch pitches to not allow the run to come in to score.
Ithaca would win the game 2-0, despite a strong pitching effort from First Year Sam Alfaro, who pitched 6 innings, while allowing only 2 runs and 5 hits while striking out 1 batter. The Tigers would wrap up their trip to Florida in Game 2 of the day against Monmouth College.
