Pasadena, CA— Oxy baseball traveled down the 110 to take on Caltech in Pasadena for the Tigers first SCIAC game of the season.
In the bottom of the 1st inning, Declan Sklut came up with a huge strikeout for the second out of the inning with a runner on third before getting a flyout to end the inning and evading trouble on the bases.
The Beavers were able to get on the board first in the 3rd inning with an RBI sacrifice fly that made the score 1-0. Oxy would respond in the top of the 4th by taking advantage of Caltech errors and a passed ball to tie the game at 1 apiece.
In the 5th, Thomas Munch led off the inning with a single and Nicholas Gonzalez reached on an error to give the Tigers two runners on with nobody out. Lou Martineau had a successful sacrifice bunt to get the runners on second and third with one out and Mason Olson brought in a run with an RBI groundout to give Oxy a 2-1 lead.
The game would turn out to be a pitching duel as both starters turned in strong outings and the game remained at a 2-1 score heading into the 7th inning. In the bottom of the 7th inning, a walk, infield single, and another walk found Sklut in trouble again with the bases loaded and nobody out.
Sklut came up clutch again and struck the next batter out to get the first out of the inning. The next batter would hit a fly ball to right field where Jeffery Cambra would make the catch and come up firing to home plate where they would get the runner out at the plate for the 3rd out of the inning to maintain the 2-1 lead.
A one out walk allowed a runner on base in the bottom of the 8th inning and that runner advanced to second on a ground ball out to the pitcher for the 2nd out of the inning. With a runner on 2nd base and 2 outs, Sklut induced an inning ending groundball to shortstop to keep Oxy up by one run.
Two singles in the bottom of the 9th found Sklut on the mound with runners on once with one out in the inning. Sklut induced another ground ball that nearly ended the game as the Tigers nearly turned two, but the runners would be on first and third with 2 outs in the 9th.
Sklut would end the game and secure the 2-1 win for the Tigers by striking out the final batter of the game! The Tigers get the win and improve to 1-0 in SCIAC play. They will be back in action against the Beavers in a doubleheader at Anderson Field tomorrow morning.
