Los Angeles, CA – In a thrilling clash against the reigning SCIAC 2023 Champions the University of Redlands Bulldogs, the Occidental softball team showcased their ability to compete against the best. Despite a valiant effort, the Tigers narrowly fell short in game one of the series, succumbing to the Bulldogs in a heart-pounding 7-6 encounter on Bell Field.
From the outset, both teams displayed their offensive prowess, with Redlands striking first in the opening inning to grab an early lead. However, Oxy quickly responded, leveling the score in the bottom of the first inning courtesy of Evelyn Lorch's timely single to center field, igniting the surge of momentum for the Tigers.
The Bulldogs regained the lead with two runs in the second inning, but the Tigers refused to back down, mounting a spirited comeback of their own. Zada Day-Adams sparked the rally with a clutch double down the left line, driving in Kaitlyn Cuarez and Sydney Crespo. Day_Adams then showcased her all-around brilliance, crossing the plate herself on Sam Palacio's single to left field, propelling Oxy into a narrow 4-3 lead.
However, Redlands responded with determination, doubling down on their offensive efforts and reclaiming the advantage with runs in the third and fourth innings. In a pivotal defensive stand in the top of the third, Day-Adams delivered two stellar plays to thwart the Bulldogs' offensive surge, including a remarkable diving catch to end the inning.
Despite Oxy's relentless pursuit, the Bulldogs held firm, staving off the Tigers' late-game rally to secure the hard-fought victory, 7-6.
