LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Men's soccer heads to the upper Midwest for the NCAA Tournament First Round, taking on Augsburg in the tournament opener. The Auggies will host the first two rounds of the tournament on their campus in Minneapolis, Minn. Here's everything you need to know about the Tigers' pod.
Â
POD INFORMATION
Â
No. 1 #2 Augsburg
No. 2 #20 Gustavus Adolphus
No. 3 Edgewood
No. 4 Occidental
Â
The Tigers come in ranked No. 129 in the National Power Index (NPI) rankings, with the ranking heavily weighted on the Tigers and SCIAC's success at the beginning of the season against outside opponents. Oxy went 1-2 on its east coast road trip to open the season, losing to tournament teams Babson and UMass Boston.
Â
Augsburg, 16-2-2 on the season are the hosts and overall No. 2 seed in the tournament. The Auggies were dominant all season, outscoring opponents 54-14 in one of the nation's top conferences – Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC).
Â
Gustavus Adolphus, another member of the MIAC, fell to eventual champion Macalester in the conference tournament semifinals. The Gusties sport two goal scorers with a combined 26 goals (Joe Flory, 14 and Kieran Mahan, 12).
Â
Edgewood earned one of the tournament's 21 at large bids after falling to Milwaukee School of Engineering in the Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference (NACC) tournament. After starting the season 1-1-2, the Eagles strung off 14 consecutive victories before falling in the NACC semis.
Â
SCOUTING AUGSBURG
Â
- The Auggies sport one of the nation's top goalscorers in Carver Tierney (17). The DI transfer from Mercyhurst scored seven of his goals in back-to-back contests at the beginning of the season – four against Linfield and three against Northwestern-St. Paul. Tierney is tied for ninth in the nation in goals.
- Mitchel Munzing and Remus Repcak are the Auggies' top facilitators. The duo has combined for 16 assists on the season.
- Both Auggie losses came at the hands of St. John's (MN). The Johnnies scored a combined seven goals in the victories – exactly half of the goals the Auggies surrendered on the season.
- Freshman goalkeeper Christian Hodges started all 20 games for the Auggies. He didn't allow a goal through the team's first six games, recording nine saves twice in that span.
- Despite holding the No. 2 ranking in the nation, the Auggies finished third in the MIAC regular season standings. Four schools from the conference reached the NCAA Tournament.
Â
COLD? LIKE MINNESOTA
Â
The Tigers will likely just miss the start of winter weather in Minneapolis, with temperatures hanging around in the fifties on Saturday and Sunday. The weather drastically cools next week, with rain coming in and highs dropping into the high thirties and forties.
Â
But for now, it's all sunshine in Minnesota's twin cities.
