Los Angeles, CA — The George Fox University Bruins wrapped up a West Coast trip by visiting Anderson Field to take on the Occidental Tigers.
The Bruins would score first in the very first inning, putting up a quick four runs in the frame. The Tigers got a run back in the bottom of the inning when Tyler Kubo reached on a fielder's choice that brought Dan Major in to score to make it 4-1.
After Oxy got another run back in the 3rd, George Fox had another big inning in the 4th, bringing across four more runs to lead 8-2.
Oxy's offense did a great job of continuing to find ways to chip away at the lead, scoring runs in both the 4th and 5th innings.
GFU would score three runs in the bottom of the 6th but the Tigers once again responded right away thanks to a clutch 2-out triple from Tyler Kubo who lined a ball down the left field line to bring in two runs to get Oxy back in the game.
The Tigers cut into the lead in the bottom of the 7th on an RBI single from Ben Fitsgerald and an RBI walk from Ben Rutkin. The Bruins would tack on an insurance run in the top of the 8th, but Oxy would put together a rally in the bottom half of the frame.
Down four runs in the bottom of the 8th, the Tigers remained patient at the plate with the first two batters of the inning reaching base on walks.
After a wild pitch, Jeffery Cambra was up to bat with two runners in scoring position and delivered a single past the shortstop to bring in the runners and make the score 12-10.
An error would load the bases for Alejandro Ducreux, who would single to shallow left field to bring in a run and Dan Major would work a walk in a great at bat to tie the game at 12.
A wild pitch that rolled out of play brought in the go ahead run for Oxy and Tommy Munch padded the lead to allow for some breathing room in the top half of the inning by hitting a sacrifice fly to right field to put the Tigers up 14-12.
Sean Elsee, who entered the game in the 7th inning, closed out the game in the 9th and sealed the win for Oxy. Elsee earned the Tigers' first win of the season on the mound, pitching three innings while allowing only three hits and one run while striking out seven.
Tyler Kubo had a standout day at the plate, going three for five with a triple and three RBIs. Jeffery Cambra had two hits, three runs and three RBIs. Nick Gonzales and Dan Major each also had two hits in the game.
The Tigers will next take the field at home in the first SCIAC game of the season against the CMS Stags on Friday, February 21st at 2:30pm.
