LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Women's water polo played a tight battle with Macalester on Tuesday, March 18, coming out on top, 10-9.
Â
The Tigers opened the game on their heels, allowing two early goals to the Scots. They answered with a 5-0 run to take a commanding lead midway through the second quarter.
Koko Butcher and
Tori Carlson each scored two goals in that span. Carlson continues her solid play after coming off a SCIAC Offensive Athlete of the Week nod Monday, March 17.
Â
Macalester fought back at the end of the first half, however, scoring a pair of goals, including one at the buzzer, to close the gap to one at the break.
Â
Oxy opened the second half with a
Hannah Lee goal, but Macalester scored three-straight to take a 7-6 lead heading into the fourth.
Â
In the first possession of the fourth quarter,
Emma Wilderman got the ball in the set and spun off a backhand shot to find the back of the net and equalize the score. That started a sequence of scores – goals from Carlson and Lee quickly built a 9-7 advantage.
Â
Lee added another goal after Macalester tacked on its eighth. Then with a chance to tie it up with two minutes left,
Alexandra Moye came out of the cage to grab a key steal. Moye was stout in the net all night, picking up six saves.
Â
The Tigers are back in action on Wednesday, March 19 against Chapman at home. Gametime set for 7 p.m.
