LOS ANGELES, Calif. – Softball hosted the Manhattanville University Valiants in a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon to wrap up a weekend of games.
GAME 1, W 2-1
Game one of the day was a nailbiter the entire way, as Oxy led 1-0 for the majority of the game after scoring the run in the 1st inning on a double to right center from Evelyn Lorch that brought home Anna Kim.
The Valiants were able to cool down the Tiger offense after the 1st inning, but Zada Day-Adams was shining on the mound and keeping Manhattanville off of the scoreboard. After surrendering a double in the 2nd inning, Day-Adams did not allow another hit until the 7th inning.
That hit was an RBI double down the right field line that brought home the first run of the game for the Valiants, but Oxy had scored an insurance run in the 6th inning on a double by Bella Harding that scored Ava Quezada.
Day-Adams worked out of trouble in the 7th inning with a runner on third base and only one out by inducing a popup to 1st base and then a flyout to right field that ended the game. The Tigers won by a score of 2-1 and Day-Adams picked up her 5th win of the season on the mound.
Despite the 2-1 score, the Tigers outhit Manhattanville 8 to 2 and also played stellar defensively to get their 6th win of the season.
GAME 1, L 6-4
Oxy would come out strong in game 2 and score first again in the 1st inning on an RBI double to left center from Sophia Siu that scored Anna Kim.
In the top of the 2nd Alysha Wagner made a highlight reel play, diving out to her left to snag a line drive that would have been a base hit that would have most likely brought in the tying run.
The Tigers would add on two more runs in the 3rd to lead 3-0, one on an RBI single from Evelyn Lorch and another on a throwing error by the Valiants. Brooke Doubler pitched the first 3 innings of this game and gave up no runs and only allowing one hit.
In the bottom of the 4th Oxy added one more run to the board on and RBI single from Alysha Wagner that brought in Quezada, but Kim and Wagner were both tagged out on the play, ending a promising Tiger rally.
The Valiants chipped away at the lead by scoring one run in the top of the 5th inning, but they would have a big inning in the top of the 6th thanks to timely hits that brought in a total of 5 runs in the inning giving Manhattanville a 6-4 lead.
Wagner lined out on a hard hit ball to second base that would have cut into the lead to end the top of the 6th with a runner on 3rd base. Manhattanville would retire Oxy in order to end the game, securing a 6-4 win.
With a split in the doubleheader Oxy is now 6-11 on the year and will next take the field on Tuesday, March 11th against Washington University (Mo.) with games at 12:00pm and 2:00pm.
