Men's water polo battles Titans, Golden Eagles at Fullerton Invite

FULLERTON, Calif. — 

GAME 1 vs. CSUF; L 22-8
Cal State Fullerton defeated Occidental College 22-8 at the Fullerton Aquatics Center on Friday. Cal State Fullerton opened with a dominant first half, scoring 13 goals, including three on power plays. Occidental managed to net eight goals overall, with four coming in the third quarter.

Cal State Fullerton established control early in the match against Occidental, with Andrew Barnuevo scoring and quickly sparking a five-goal run for Fullerton. Contributions from Nico D'Angelo and Alec Isaacman helped them achieve a 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. Occidental's Max Stone broke the momentum with a goal in the second quarter, but Fullerton quickly responded with a goal by Luke Vargas and continued to extend the lead. Despite Occidental's attempts to close the gap, including a penalty shot goal by Travis Hughes in the third quarter, Fullerton maintained their advantage, closing the match with a final score of 22-8. Barnuevo led Fullerton with multiple goals and assists, contributing significantly to their offensive success.

Max Stone led the Tigers' offensive efforts by scoring two goals on four attempts and making two steals. Lars Schubert contributed significantly with three assists and a blocked shot. Zane Derrod was effective in the field, scoring two goals and adding an assist with seven shots. In goal, Jack Schroeder was a formidable presence, tallying 13 saves to anchor the defense.

GAME 2 vs CUI; L 22-13
Concordia defeated Occidental College 22-13 in a non-conference game at the Fullerton Aquatics Center. Concordia built an early advantage with an 8-goal first quarter, maintaining a strong lead throughout the match. Both teams converted two penalty shots, while Concordia matched the Tigers' four power-play goals.

Concordia dominated the first quarter against the Tigers, with Kai Young scoring twice, including the opening goal, to establish a 5-0 lead. Occidental broke through with a goal from Lars Schubert, but Young responded to make it 6-1. In the second quarter, Concordia extended their lead to 11-4, despite the Tigers' efforts, including a penalty shot by Travis Hughes. The third quarter saw a back-and-forth exchange, with Occidental narrowing the gap momentarily after goals by Vincent Ryser and Danny Miller, though Concordia maintained a 17-10 lead by the end. Concordia sealed the win in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Tigers to finish with a 22-13 victory, highlighted by Levi Riegelmann's goal.

Hughes led the Tigers with three goals and three assists, also winning two sprints and blocking one shot. Miller contributed two goals on three attempts, while Ryser matched his scoring with two goals and added two steals. Quin Concannon was efficient, scoring once and assisting another goal on his only shot of the game.

The next challenge for the Tigers takes them to Redlands, California, where they will face the University of Redlands. The match is set for Wednesday, Sept. 24, at 7 p.m.
