LOS ANGELES — Occidental defeated Caltech 6-0 Wednesday at W.C. Patterson Field at Jack Kemp Stadium. Occidental put 13 of its 25 shots on goal while limiting Caltech to two shots on goal. The Tigers scored four times in the first half and twice in the second while recording the shutout. The result moved Occidental to 4-2-3 overall and 2-0-2 in league play, while Caltech fell to 5-3-1 and 1-2-1.
Occidental turned a sustained first-half push into a 4-0 halftime lead, scoring four times from 28:42 to 34:39. Earlier, Occidental created repeated chances without scoring, including saves by Ethan Hamel on shots from
Elijah Edelman,
Charlie Miller and
Ethan Carr, while also earning five corner kicks before the breakthrough.
Cooper Gersch opened the scoring off an assist from
Enzo Bernales at 28:42, and
Kent Ortiz made it 2-0 at 30:55.
Yordan Marinov added a goal at 33:45 before Bernales scored at 34:39, and Occidental continued to generate set-piece pressure late in the half while carrying the 4-0 advantage into halftime.
Occidental turned a 4-0 halftime advantage into a 6-0 cushion early in the second half, with
Piero Falconi Pujalt scoring in the 54th minute off an Edelman assist and Edelman adding another in the 57th from Carr.
The Tigers generated pressure before and around those goals, earning two early corners and forcing Alex Crowley into saves on Falconi Pujalt's shots in the 54th and 56th minutes.
Occidental kept pushing later in the half with two more corners and three shots between the 68th and 78th minutes, including attempts from Marinov,
Daniel Lee and
Ted O'Brien. Caltech pressed late with two corners and four shots from the 80th through 88th minutes, but
Casey Scott saved efforts from Abdullahi Adeboye and Dean Yao as Occidental finished off the 6-0 win.
