LOS ANGELES — Occidental lost to Chapman 3-0 (20-25, 15-25, 15-25) on Tuesday. Occidental was held to 25 kills and a .009 hitting percentage, while Chapman finished with 37 kills and hit .231.
Occidental's main answer in the first set came midway through, when it moved from an 11-9 deficit to a 14-12 lead behind kills from
Sloane Shoop,
Jasmine Shum and
Corinne Van Haeren plus Chapman attack errors.
After Chapman went ahead 21-16, Occidental pushed back again, with
Katelyn Cajigas and
Anna Curtis-Revelle combining on a block before Curtis-Revelle's ace made it 21-19. Chapman halted the run and took the set 25-20.
Occidental's second set shifted when Chapman scored six straight points to move from 7-5 to 13-5, and Occidental could not erase the gap.
Jasmine Shum ended that stretch with a kill from
Chloe Jeong, while
Sloane Shoop and Curtis-Revelle supplied kills during later Occidental responses. Chapman kept the separation and took the set 25-15.
Occidental could not overcome Chapman's early separation in the third set, falling behind 7-2 and later 20-10 before dropping the set 25-15.
Kendall Taylor helped Occidental make a late three-point push with a service ace as the home side moved from 23-12 to 23-15, but Chapman took the final two points to close it out.
