LOS ANGELES — Occidental (5-4-4, 3-2-3) defeated Cal Lutheran (4-7-3, 2-5-1) 4-2 on Wednesday at W.C. Patterson Field at Jack Kemp Stadium.
Lewis Park scored off an assist from
Ted O'Brien in the 78th minute as Occidental moved ahead 3-2.
Occidental scored twice in each half and put six of its nine shots on goal, while Cal Lutheran finished with a 21-9 shot advantage and forced five Occidental saves.
Occidental built a 2-0 first-half lead, with
Elijah Edelman converting a penalty kick at 7:12 after he and
Alex Yu had already forced saves.
Charlie Miller followed with a goal at 18:36 to make it 2-0.
Cal Lutheran pushed back from 25:27 to 37:02 with multiple attacking actions, including shots, two corners and a shot off the left woodwork, but Occidental kept the score at 2-0 through that stretch. The half became more physical late, and Shaw Nishizawa scored for Cal Lutheran at 42:15 before Occidental went into halftime ahead 2-1.
Park scored in the 78th and 89th minutes, with
Ted O'Brien assisting the first, as Occidental turned a 2-2 second-half score into a 4-2 finish. Earlier, Cal Lutheran pushed after halftime and tied the match at 62:41 on Dane Paulson's goal, but
Carlos Abram helped keep Occidental level with saves in the 58th, 63rd, 67th and 69th minutes.
After a physical stretch that included multiple fouls and cards, Occidental went back in front at 77:34 when Park finished O'Brien's assist for a 3-2 lead. Cal Lutheran generated two corners and three shots after that, but Abram made another save in the 80th minute before Park added the final goal at 88:54 to close out Occidental's 4-2 win.
