AZUSA, Calif. — Occidental lost to Azusa Pacific 3-1 on Tuesday, with set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 14-25, 8-25. Occidental took the opening set after trailing 21-19, but was held to 14 and eight points over the final two sets.
Occidental erased a late 21-19 deficit with six straight points to take the first set 25-21. After
Corinne Van Haeren's kill made it 21-20,
Elizabeth Hermosillo served the final five points, including an ace, and
Abby Werbel added a kill during the closing stretch.
Occidental moved in front midway through the second set, turning a 10-8 deficit into a 13-11 lead behind a Hermosillo service ace and an Azusa Pacific attack error. The Tigers later led 19-16, but Azusa Pacific scored eight straight points to reach set point at 24-19. Occidental answered with three straight, including a
Lauren Neely kill, before Azusa Pacific closed the set 25-22.
Azusa Pacific scored seven straight after a 6-6 score to put Occidental in a 13-6 hole in the third set. Occidental answered with four consecutive points, getting kills from Neely and
Katelyn Cajigas before
Chloe Jeong served an ace to make it 13-10. Azusa Pacific pulled away from there and took the set, 25-14.
Occidental never recovered from Azusa Pacific's early separation in the fourth set, falling behind 9-1 before
Sloane Shoop's kill from Jeong gave Occidental its second point. Occidental's main response came midway through the set, when it scored three straight points to reach 7-16, capped by
Audrey Makler's block.
Corinne Van Haeren later added a kill from
Eyleen Sanchez, but Azusa Pacific scored the final five points to take the set 25-8.
