LA VERNE, Calif. — Occidental (7-14, 2-8 SCIAC) lost to La Verne (12-7, 8-3 SCIAC) 3-0 on Friday, with set scores of 17-25, 13-25 and 17-25. Occidental was held to 20 kills and a -.034 hitting percentage, while La Verne finished with 41 kills and hit .227.
Occidental was even at 14-14 after
Sloane Shoop put away a kill from
Kendall Taylor, but La Verne scored the next eight points to take control of the first set. Earlier, Occidental started with four straight points, including kills by Shoop,
Corinne Van Haeren and
Anna Curtis-Revelle.
Abby Werbel and
Katelyn Cajigas teamed on a block as Occidental moved back within 22-16, but La Verne closed out the set 25-17.
Occidental opened the second set with
Sloane Shoop's kill from
Eyleen Sanchez and an
Elizabeth Hermosillo ace, and a Shoop/Curtis-Revelle block helped make it 4-1. La Verne answered by moving from a 6-6 tie to a 12-6 lead, then added another stretch after
Corinne Van Haeren's kill brought Occidental to 9-14. Occidental picked up late points on an
Abby Werbel/Shoop block and La Verne errors, but La Verne closed out the set 25-13.
Occidental fell into an early 11-3 hole in the third set, then answered with a four-point push that included a Curtis-Revelle kill and consecutive blocks involving
Audrey Makler and Van Haeren.
Eyleen Sanchez later served back-to-back aces, and Curtis-Revelle added several late kills to keep Occidental moving. La Verne closed out the set 25-17.
